SC3D Who? What? Why? How?

SC3D.COM, Who? What? Why? How?

Hey there! I’m Simon O’Connor, 49 years old, mostly associated with software development, computer games and real-time 3D engines specifically, but also sometimes known for making music and DJing. The about me section has more info and contact details. I’ve been known under guises such as SiMono3D (Twitter), S1CA (GameDev.net), Trixter (Amiga demoscene), and SiMono (music & DJing)

So what does SC3D mean? Is it an acronym or something? Maybe. I was looking for a short domain that had something connected to me – 3D is easy: I’ve spent most of my career designing and developing real-time 3D graphics engines. My first name is Simon, so S made sense. I haven’t defined the C but could be a few things or none of them, technically it could be the first letter of my surname (the O’ part just means “descendent of”), or it could mean something like Codes or Creates?

I’ve had this domain for ages, originally this was intended as a personal site, then moved to the idea of spinning up a 3D engine development consultancy start-up, and now it’s back to being a personal site, but with a bias towards my professional activities. Loosely it’s a blog for things which don’t fit on social media posts, and maybe occasionally a showcase, experimental testbed, or even just a glorified Linktree.

The site HTML is built using Hugo; I used WordPress in the past, but constantly patching it and suffering a few drive-by database attacks pushed me back to old-school static sites – nothing I do really needs a dynamic site. Using Markdown and the ‘building’ workflow also feels natural to my coder brain. The data is served to you over AWS via all their S3, DNS, CDN jiggery-pokery.
